Village Bakery 1/2 Marathon

Sunday 17th February

Race Report

Undeterred by the threat of -4 degree conditions four Deestriders piled into Jay’s Corsa, which had taken some serious de-icing just before 9am, to get to the Wrexham Industrial Estate.  Luckily enough by 11 am the temperature had increased to the point where the infamous “five mile marker” (patch of ice) had ceased to be and conditions on this relatively flat course were good.

“10K Maxx” Jay Jennions was unsure how she would fare at such a daunting distance, having only started getting those seriously long runs in in the past few weeks.  Unsurprisingly she began to struggle in the later stages, however a strong first hour gave her sufficient leeway to get round in a most satisfying 1.27.18 and land the North Wales U35 bronze.  Phil Taylor, whose determination and hard work never fail to impress, paced himself so well that “The Power” (sorry, that name’s already gone) was able to sprint for the line in a cracking time of 1.51.13, obliterating his previous time for the distance by more than 6 minutes.  He ran for much of the race with Lorna Royle and Leslie Ingram, both of whom have improved considerably.  Lorna made it under the magic 1.50 barrier with an excellent new PB of 1.49.20 whilst Leslie was unlucky to get injured en route, nevertheless battling bravely to the end to post a very creditable 1.53.56, in time for a well deserved rub down from the travelling physio.

Once everyone got home and finally felt like eating again, the prize of the Bakery’s “Bara Brith” went down very well with a cup of tea no doubt. Well done to everyone and let’s take this team spirit into the next Border League.
