Border League 1- Christleton- 18th October 2009

Cool, overcast conditions greeted the Deestriders as they opened their account at the 2009-10 Border League on this 5.9 mile, gently undulating multiterrain course. Thanks to Martin's girls Amy and Isobel for doing the numbers and to the club members who turned out to support.

The men's race was well represented- Steve Thomas may not feel quite at the top of his game at the minute but even so, he still led the team in with a very good 34.57. New boy Richard Forster is a more than useful addition to the club as he gave us a terrific 35.50, and warhorse Fred Aird looks set to terrorize the V50s with an on-form 37.10. "The Lad" Andy Edwards managed a brilliant 37.41 which should give him confidence going into the Snowdonia Marathon as he seeks to win the junior race (no pressure there then Andy). Mike O'Brien never lets us down with his consistently excellent performances, of which his 41.54 was one, and he was pushed hard by Paul Hunt with a quality 42.06. Chris Jones, who normally does fell races, said he'd forgotten how hard road races of these distances are, but obviously he was up to the challenge with 42.15, whilst Phil "The Power #2" Taylor had the race of his life with a jawdropping 42.37. Strong performances then came from Peter Rooney (45.05) and the tag team of Sid Bailey (45.11) and Kev Burns (45.30) with Mike Norris anchoring the men in a brave 51.30.

In the women's race, Jay Jennions' apparently resolved tight calf began to rear its ugly head once more. Pushing through increasing pain to stay with the chasers for a ferocious first 5k within a minute of her best, she soon after had to throw in the towel to save her leg from further injury, but managed to eventually make it home in a courageous 43.22. Lucy Reid made a welcome appearance for the ladies with a very good 52.43 and Jane Evans launched her assault on the V60 category with a tremendous 54.12. Val Blair, making her long-awaited Border League comeback, was not far behind with a strong 58.16.

After the race the club enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Piper in Hoole, thanks club and pub. And well done to those who won prizes in last year's Borders, although the men might have fun passing the Improvers Trophy around as there are now so many of them. Good luck to those who are doing Snowdonia- wrap up well and take it steady. Border League 2 is on 15 November at Birkenhead Park- see you there and try to car share!
