The Border League series has some slightly unusual routes, but only one is run entirely in a park and that would be Wallasey's Birkenhead course. Four laps of a large slope, taking in a deceptively long, twisting stretch around a hidden lake to make the distance up to just shy of 5.5 miles, it is not a fast run and competitors were lucky the weather stayed nice for the race itself, if not the before and after.
Steve Thomas is back near his best as he led the club home with 32.29, a brilliant 23rd overall. Martin Witty then followed with a strong 36.28. Edwards Snr has been out of action for some time with injuries but proved himself "invince-ible" with an on-form 36.59. In next was Paul Hunt with an excellent 37.33, with Alan Jones not far behind with a battling display of 39.57- Alan's performance was all the more impressive given his current injuries make it impossible for him to train on hills. Phil Taylor continues his run of tremendous form with 40.41, and Peter Rooney did extremely well to come in hot on his heels with 41.09. Kev Burns anchored the lads with a typically high quality 42.43. Unfortunately Fred Aird and Ady Clarke had to drop out mid-race with injury- thanks for trying though guys and get well soon.
In the women's race Jay Jennions, recovering from a calf injury, took it steady and managed a more than satisfactory 16th with 39.01. Linda Martin was not far behind with a quality 40.27, and Lorna Royle, just three weeks after the tough Snowdonia marathon, completed the ladies' scorecard with a very good 44.41- the ladies came second in division 2 for this race. Jane Evans was in next with a brave 51.31. And let's not forget club debutante Emma Cadwalader, who courageously stuck it out for 58.23 despite recent illness, and Leslie Ingram, who kept her company all the way, showing club spirit.
