Glorious conditions close to home made for a scenic (if very steep) up and down 4.45 miler starting from Deeside College. Steve Thomas was first in with a typically excellent 25.39 while the outstanding Andy Edwards continues to make his mark on the junior division (now ranked sixth in his first season) with 27.09. Martin Witty and Vince Edwards had a friendly battle for terrific times of 29.42 and 30.06 respectively, followed by a typically powerful performance from Mike O’Brien with 31.37. Peter Rooney gave us a strong 33.51 and the tandem of Sid Bailey and Kev Burns pushed each other as usual for fine times of 34.16 and 34.43.
Linda Martin has put her injury well behind her as she has returned to top form, being first lady home with 31.54. Jay Jennions still running 30 miles a week at 6 months pregnant wasn’t about to try anything risky, but nevertheless managed a surprisingly fast 33.20 largely thanks to teaming up along the way with Tattenhall’s Sara Atkinson and stunned many that she is still racing. Lorna Royle, who ran with Jay for at least the first mile, wasn’t far behind with a brilliant 33.56. Leslie Ingram was next in for the women with an excellent 36.04. Emily Davies sprinted down the track for a courageous 38.22 and Jane Evans, 60 years young, got the biggest cheer of the day as she completed the tough course in a very good 42.17.
Following the race there was a very enjoyable dinner at the Glasfryn to celebrate Jane’s birthday. Thanks Leslie for organising that. This year’s Border League finale in Wrexham poses many questions. Will Lorna and Jane win much deserved prizes in their age categories? Will Jay run, less than 2 months from giving birth (she hasn’t yet ruled it out!)? Will the club make it out for a meal, and if so, will anywhere take us!? For all these answers and more, find out on 29 April 2009!
