Several Deestriders took part in this popular, scenic, flat race which has a bit of a reputation for being seriously affected by the weather, given it takes place largely on remote country lanes in the middle of winter. Luckily, a mild start to December meant there was no ice to worry about this year and the race started beautifully- sunny and dry. However, it had been raining earlier and there were some big puddles to look out for. The second half also saw a powerful headwind, which knocked many times down somewhat, but there were still some tremendous performances.
Martin Witty led the club in with a typically excellent 41.40. Nick Chadwick, recovering from a hamstring injury, wasn’t sure beforehand that he should be running, but he obviously made the right decision with a fantastic 42.48 and fortunately his leg didn’t give him too much grief. Not far behind was Jay Jennions, who in the past six months has given birth and then had to overcome a calf problem. Her 43.09 appeared in the official results as 43.21, but either way was a respectable time and she looks set to return to form over the coming months. Phil Taylor, meanwhile, is possibly the club’s improver of the year and looks set to break 45 minutes in 2010, as he came in next with an incredible PB of 45.54. This must have been a short sprint, meanwhile, for ultra runner Steve Daniels, who was hot on his heels with a terrific 46.33. Thanks to the organisers, marshals, other helpers and suppliers of car parking for putting on this successful event.
